Top 5 Wedding Myths

I must spend a lot of money on my wedding, to have it be memorable and special.

Not True. A little, ok, a lot, of preparation goes a long way! Enlist in the right help (a wedding planner like myself, for instance,) and we can find unique ways to make your wedding yours, and stay on budget. DIY is all the wedding rage these days, and is a great way to save money, to a point. Just leave the catering, photography and some other important aspects to the pros. You can, however, make some fabulous embellishments to your wedding stationary/favors, create simple table centerpieces, and even make your own jewelry!

2. 2. I cannot have a big, traditional wedding if I am marrying for a second time.

Not True. Ok, long ago, Miss Manners would have disagreed, but this is a different time. Second, or third, or fourth time brides can wear white, they can be married in a church, they can have the big reception, do the cake cutting, bouquet toss, garter toss, all of it! Everything is simply up to the personal preference of the couple. One thing, however, might be considered a faux paux; to register for gifts. Although some of your guests may insist on getting you some sort of wedding gift, it is not proper etiquette to expect wedding gifts (or money,) if this is not your first wedding. You may however, only when asked of course, suggest that a donation be made to your favorite charity, in your name, in lieu of a traditional wedding gift.

3. 3. A cocktail and hors d’ouevres reception will save us money, rather than doing a sit-down meal.

Not True. Well this one depends on your definition of “hors d’ouevres reception,” but typically, for this type of party, I suggest 5 pieces of hors d’ouevres per person, per hour. So, if you are doing a 2 hour cocktail reception, at $3 per piece, that is $30 a head. That does not even factor in your waitstaff fees, which, let’s face it, are going to be doing more work continually passing food around. Also, guests drink MORE during a cocktail/hors d’ouevres only reception. So, if you are hosting the bar, you may end up spending a great deal more, than if you were to do a seated meal, or buffet. What it comes down to, is, what is right for you and your guests? What sort of mood do you want to set? Then be honest with your caterer about what your budget is, and see if you can work out some creative compromises.

4. 4. The bride always walks down the aisle with her father.

Not True. I can personally attest to this one. At my wedding, I walked down the aisle alone. No, my dad hadn’t passed away. Yes, he was at the wedding ceremony. But I chose to independently enter into my marriage, not to be “given away.” In this day and age, there are no “traditional” families, or at least very few that I have encountered. (Both sets of parents still together, everybody getting along.) Today brides may have to decide between, “do I walk down the aisle with my biological father, who has never been there for me, or my step-father who I have grown up with?” (My suggestion, if the decision is too hard to make, walk with them both, one on each arm!) A bride might choose to walk down with her mother, who has been her sole-support system. Heck, I am working with a bride right now who has to figure out how to incorporate a father’s male partner. So while there is no easy answer here on who should walk you down the aisle, the decision has to be a personal one.

5. 5. I can just hire a “day of wedding planner” or use my venue’s coordinator to ensure that my wedding will run smoothly.

Not true! While I do offer a package that I have come to refer to as “Week of Wedding Planning,” in all actuality, this package should be contracted at a minimum of 1 month prior to a bride’s wedding date. There is no such thing as “day of wedding planning,” or if there is, it is not going to be very beneficial to you! My package includes at least 1 month’s time of preparation, contacting contracted wedding vendors, checking checklists, organizing event timelines, looking over contracts, meeting with the bride and groom on several occasions, attending the site walk-through, directing the rehearsal and of course working a 12-16 hour day, the day of the wedding. Any planner that says that they can do all of this, without the proper preparation and experience, and just swing in, on the day of the wedding to hope that things run smoothly, is wrong! Your venue may come with a “coordinator,” which may lead you to believe that you need not hire a professional wedding planner. This coordinator works for the hotel, church, park, etc, they do not work for you! This person will not be your advocate for how you want things to go, on your wedding day. They will not be familiar with which family members the photographers needs in the photos, what songs are on your do-not play list, that uncle Mike should not be allowed near the open bar, and that it is very, very important to you to have your heirloom hair pin exchanged for your veil after the ceremony. Oftentimes, the assigned employee may even depart after you cut the cake, leaving your loved ones to be the ones to put all of the gifts in the car, clean up the décor, return rentals, sweep the floors and take out the trash! After all of the work that you all have put into planning this day, isn’t peace of mind worth hiring someone who is going to be standing in your corner?

60, 30, 10 Color Rule

I recently read from a florist, about the one thing that they wish their clients new, before consulting with them about their wedding/event. The florist mentioned the "60-30-10 Color Rule." I had never heard of this "rule" before but immediately knew what she was referencing. Just recently I had asked my own client, when discussing her color scheme for her wedding, what percentage of your wedding do you want color A, color B, etc. Well, come to find out, there is an actual math formula to decorating.

eHow.com gives instructions on how to use this rule when decorating your home.

Basically, your chosen primary color should be seen approximately 60% of the time; think some of the table/chair cover linens, bridesmaids' dresses, men's vests and the majority of floral and decor items. In the inspirational collage shown above from TheKnot.com, this color would be "Aquamarine."

The secondary color should show up approximately 30% of the time; as in the neutral color white in the sample image shown. This color should compliment the primary color chosen, but not be too bold. The color "White" can be paired with the "Aquamarine" on the wedding invitations, in the bride's bouquet, and the men's dress shirts, as well as be the color of the cake icing.
The final color will be used as an accent, only appearing 10% of the time. Choose a bold, bright color, like the "Orange" in the picture. Use your accent color for the ribbon on your bouquet, the mens' ties, floral accents and for your guests' favors.

EWedNews.com recently printed an article entitled: "Do It Yourself or Doing Yourself In?" The article talks about the current DIY trend that many brides have adopted due to dwindling budgets. The editor, although agreeing that doing it yourself projects can sometimes save money, might not always be worth the effort. Here is the introduction to the article, as well as my response to the post:

Do It Yourself or Doing Yourself In?

Questions are being raised, whether napkin holders made from spent toilet tissue rolls offer the same personal touch to wedding affairs; or if what was originally deemed cute may have crossed the line, over to tacky. Are things really that bad that a few dollars spent to retain the services of a professional won’t maintain your standard of living? Probably not but it may avert the risk of people talking negatively about you for decades.

My response to the article:
Knowing the need to always be changing my services with the times, I now offer brides a "DIY Planning Package." This package does not advocate the ridiculous projects mentioned in the above article, but gives an alternative to creative brides who have enough time on their hands to execute planning their own event. My DIY (Getting Started) Package includes a budget template, (with realistic estimates of what they should be prepared to spend on each area of their wedding,) as well as a list of my preferred vendors, and some suggestions on exactly what portions of their wedding decor, etc, they can do on their own. For example, I offer brides use of my wholesale account with a local floral warehouse, to go and hand pick blooms that they might put in a bud vase to decorate their cocktail tables. I do, however, caution that they will need to contract a professional florist to create more complicated arrangements, such as their bouquets. DIY brides might save money, contracting this package, but they will not receive the hand holding, unlimited consultation hours and attendance at vendor meetings/other major appointments, as included in my Total Event Planning Package. This type of bride needs to be aware that they will need to be able to invest more of their own time to research, in detail, the best products and services for their individual needs. Additionally, the "Print Your Own Invitation Kit" at Target might amount to a cheaper, per piece price; but add in what your time is worth to buy ink, find the appropriate template and wording, making sure paper is centered in your printer, and assemble each piece on your own and then decide whether the headache is worth it. Plus, unless you have your own letterpress at home, the difference in the quality of professionally printed at DIY stationary, is quite noticeable. In sum, there are some smart DIY ideas, (and ways to personalize your event,) but each bride needs to weigh the pros and cons of these projects, the effects on their time and levels of stress.

Wedding at Pines at Genesee

Lisa and Tim love the Colorado outdoors, so it was only fitting that they hold their vows nestled in the pine trees in our not too distant foothills of Golden, Colorado at the appropriately named Pines at Genesee. The ceremony, which was officiated over by Chris Mohr, from Foothill's Chapel, was held on the lower stone patio under a wooden arbor draped in luxurious pink satin. The couple participated in a sand ceremony and enjoyed a reading and song by close, personal friends.

Hot pink bridesmaids' bouquets by Plum Sage Floral, added a punch of color while Lisa's soft pink and ivory bouquet complimented her billowing strapless gown with pick ups. Charms holding photos of the bride's grandparents were attached to the wrapped stems, allowing their spirits to be present on that special day. Guests threw rose petals from custom made paper cones hung on aisle chairs stamped with the couple's repeated wedding design (a rose for the bride, whose maiden-name was "Rosebush.")

Following outdoor photos of the family and wedding party, guests moved inside or to the outdoor deck to enjoy hors d'ouvres and the couple's signature pink cocktail, "The Lovebird." Guests placed their cards and gifts in the gift wagon, before signing the couple's photo guestbook and finding their seats in the reception room which floor to celiling windows allowed the outside to be enjoyed in. Table decoration was kept simple with floating candles and strung orchids in cylinders, everything of course, in a shade of pink. The mother of the groom provided favor cones for each couple and a kid's bag, with small toys, snacks and craft items was placed at each child's place setting.

The three-tier cake, made by Das Meyer Bakery was cut into after dinner, then dancing ensued as fun was had by all. As always, Quality Mobile Sound made sure that guests were up and moving until the very end.

One highlight of the night, for the bride, was a song performed by her old sorority as they surrounded her on the dancefloor for this tradition. At the end of the evening, family and friends waited outside to watch the bride and groom depart by vintage automobile courtesy of Rich's Old Autos.

Summer Colors

Who wouldn't adore any piece of jewelry in that light blue box with a crisp, white ribbon from Tiffany's? This summer color trend uses that pale blue paired with some soft, butter yellows and citrus orange on a background of heavenly white. Less is more with this simplistic palatte, adding most of the punches of color through florals. Choose a vintage look, Letterpress invite, tied with white satin ribbon. For a shabby chic look, mix and match different patterns of china, tea pots and vases. In your bouquet and centerpieces, you many choose roses, daffodils, irises and lillies. Part 2: Wedding Planner's FAM to Beaver Creek/Aspen

On day two, we went to one more local venue, Vista at Arrowhead , a beautiful country club with views of the greens.

Then began the trek up to Aspen, via Colorado Mountain Express. On our way, we stopped for lunch in Wolcott at a the rustic 4 Eagle Ranch with gorgeous views. Tom and Tess treated us with the best chili I have ever tasted before we toured their indoor and outdoor event spaces. With over 60 horses and a tame buffolo, they so dearly named "Reject," this was truley an authentic western venue.

Sarah Reynolds, sreynolds@hjerome.com , took us to The historic Hotel Jerome, in Aspen, this year celebrating its 120th year. Cocktails in the grand ballroom with some fabulous vendors, including Halcyon Productions and Robin Proctor, were followed by a multi-course dinner in the library. I was deeply impressed by the chef who managed to whip up and entirely different, gluten -free, menu for a fellow guest at the last minute.

More drinks followed at The J-Bar as we hoped to catch a glimpse at a frequenting celebrity.

For dinner we traveled to Saddle Ridge and received an informative tour of all of its historic, Old West artifacts. We talked with the staff and viewed photo albums of Beaver Creek's other wedding venues, Allie's Cabin and Beano's Cabin

Historic Stanley Hotel Wedding

This is the story of my first Stanley Wedding:

Although the weather did not choose to cooperate at The Stanley Hotel, and we ended up moving the ceremony indoors, it was still a beautiful view for the wedding, overlooking the Estes Park mountains and blossoming cherry tree.

Ellen Cara Floral stayed and helped set up the lovely jewel-toned centerpieces until right up until the beginning of the ceremony, which was held in the MacGreggor Ballroom.

Patty and Jeff's beautiful ceremony, which was officiated over by Cris Chrisfield, of Longmont, included vows to all of the bride and groom's girls (including the youngest two, 5 year olds a mere 2 months apart,) giving of bibles, communion and a unity sand ceremony. The violinist and cellist from Orelia String Quartet provided the lovely musical accompaniment.

As the bride and groom had formal photographs taken by Ashly Davis Photography, guests filed into the cocktail reception,where they signed the bride's custom made guestbook and kids found their personalized "kids kits," filled with coloring books, stickers, snacks and bubbles, made by a guest.

After some mingling, guests found their seats in the Pinon/Billiard Room.

Toasts were made from the head table, including one from the bride's eldest daughter (age 11.)

A variety of cheescakes were served, prepared by the Stanley Hotel, at the dessert buffet.

By the end of the evening, everyone was tuckered out, but mostly excited to see these two wonderful people and beautiful families, join into one. I am glad that they allowed me to share in their special day!

On Your Wedding Day, Give Back

More and more couples in this day and age are for-going registering for traditional wedding gifts such as toasters and bath towels. Why? Brides and grooms are older now and have been living on their own for sometime, or co-habitating with their fiancé. They already have all of the household items that they need. Some couples hope to receive un-conventional gifts such as recreational equipment or theatre tickets. Others create honeymoon registries. Others still, are increasingly turning their extravagant, one day celebrations into an excuse to give back. Whether an eco-friendly bride and groom, hoping to make an impact on the conservation of the rainforests, or a couple wanting to give to an organization specializing in research for a disease or disability that may hit close to home, there are many options of where to turn to when wanting to donate.

Sites to check out:
Changingthepresent.org - Lets friends honor a marriage with inspiring gifts: anything from providing a child with her first book to funding an hour of cancer research. Beautiful, personalized greeting cards include a photo and description of your gift. A few categories available to choose from are refugees, mental health, medical research, global warming and disaster relief.
IDoFoundation.org - Create a wedding gift registry with the I Do Foundation's partner stores and up to 10% of gift purchases will be donated to your favorite charity. Affiliates include Target, REI and Linens and Things.
JustGive.org - Couples getting married can choose specific charities, and justgive.org creates a special page the bride and groom refer their guests to, allowing them to donate to the charities in their names.

It is still concerned in poor taste to include information requesting a type of gift with the wedding invitations. Instead, get the message out by word of mouth. Enlist in the help of your immediate families and wedding party to pass on the word that you would rather your guests donate to a good cause than search for a blender. It is ok to let guests know, when they ask you where you are registered, that you are doing something different.

Need another excuse to give? You can spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars, on that little box of Jordan Almonds with the matching ribbon and mini picture frame/place card holder at each place setting. But is that a detail that you or your guests will remember years from now? Instead of a traditional guest favor, why not let your guests know that you are thankful they could witness your vows and that you have donated to your favorite charity in their names? You can describe the donation in a table card, a small scroll tied with a ribbon or any other way that can still coordinate with the colors and theme of your wedding. Some organizations, such the American Diabetes Association, will actually supply the table cards that explain the wedding donation to guests If you are remembering a specific loved one and that is why you chose the charity that you did, you can refer to them on the placecard with a special message:

Smiling, watching over us
As we say "I do."
Forever in our hearts,
Forever in our lives —
And so we say our vows
In loving memory of you.

At the end of the wedding, the giving can continue. Ask your caterer to donate the leftover food to a homeless shelter. Have someone from your wedding party bring your floral centerpieces to a nursing home or hospital. You can even donate your wedding gown to an organization like bridesagainstbreastcancer.org.

Boettcher Mansion Wedding

Wow, I just realized I never posted on one of my favorite weddings. Dee Dee, an elementary school teacher and Stephen, a phys. ed. professional were wed in June at Boettcher Mansion in Golden.

We went with a nature theme with bright, jewel-toned colors, as in the ones seen here in the centerpieces. Orange, purple and red ribbon flowed from the outdoor arbor on the flagstone patio where the couple said their vow.s A twig of pine was tucked into each napkin with a pinecone at each place setting. The pinecones were collected personally by the bride and groom on nature hikes, leading up to their wedding day. Each table was labeled with the name of a national or state park that the bride and groom had visited together.The flowers were provided by Ria, with Nature's Grace Design, the cake made by a friend of the bride. Photos of the bride and groom's parents adorned their cake table.

At the end of the night, guests were shuttled back to their hotels, each with a World Famous Johnson's Corner cinnamon roll. The newlyweds departed in a turquose, vintage automobile, admittedly the photographer's favorite focal point to capture that night.

Anne and John's Wedding

I had the pleasure last week, of orchestrating Anne and John's wedding. The ceremony was held at Ryssby Church in Longmont and the reception was as Rembrandt Yard Art Gallery in Boulder. Thankfully the weather cooperated and all of their scheduled guests, from our of town were able to make it!

Nature's Grace Design did a lovely job for us, as always. We were aiming for a very elegant, but contemporary look. Using a dark burgundy, seasonal color, without wanting things to look, as the bride put it, "Christmassy."

Canon City Events

I recently had the pleasure of taking a weekend trip to Canon City, Colorado. Yes, this is the city of prisons, but it also has some of the most magnificant views in the state, nay, the nation.

I was delighted to be invited to take a ride on The Royal Gorge Route. This scenic old-fashioned train ride was both fun and high-class. My lunch of a Caeser salad, apricot glazed chicken breast and chocolate dessert was scrumptious! They also have a full bar on board to include wines from the local Canon City winery. Take a look at their website to learn about their upcoming events

including Santa Express Train, Murder Mystery Train and New Year's Eve Train.

Now, as for that winery..............................

Wow! I have never seen a more beautiful location for a winery. The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey is an old monastery with beautiful architecture, an outdoor wedding ceremony spot, wild horses and of course tasting room. My favorites were the 2008 American Reisling which comes in a beautiful blue bottle, and a wine that they call their "Wild Bunch Harvest," which is comprised of grapes donated from dozens of area vineyards. It even lists the contributors on the back of the bottle. While we were there, one of the locals came in to purchase 6 cases of this bottle saying that it makes for a perfect, more personal holiday gift!

Eager to learn more about this small town, we chatted up some locals at the Irish Pub, McClellan's Grill and Brewing Company. I handed out some business cards when I heard that a girl there was planning her wedding (which had to be held in Canon City, since she had lived there all her life.) She told me about the probable location for her reception, The Annex Event Center. This historic ballroom, with built in stage is located right there on Main St.

Take a day trip (or stay the night at the brand new Hampton Inn,) soon! And tell them I sent you!

Al's Formal Wear Vendor Night and Tux Bux

Thank you to Al's Formal Wear of Loveland, CO for allowing Precious Moments Weddings and Events to participate in their Vendor Night last night. We had a few customers stop by to see who was there, but mostly, it was just a wonderful opportunity to network with some other wonderful, local wedding and event professionals!

Brando Davenport and Ashley Skattum, the managers of the Loveland store and the Greeley stores, were in charge of putting the event together. As I had the chance to browse their selection of men's wear, I was pleasantly surprised with what they had to offer. My request for a navy blue blazer, as a potential staple for one of my upcoming weddings, was even able to be granted and they told me that if there is something that they do not offer, in store, they would be happy to have it ordered for me.

A key tip that I was given by the store's associates was to not let couples skip out on their 2-day before the wedding final fitting! If there happened to be a problem, it would be easily fixed, as long as the store has knowledge of it ahead of time. Also, as Prom is a very busy season for Al's Formal Wear, boys/men, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO RESERVE YOUR TUX RENTAL! You do not want to be the last one to try to find a suit, and realize that they have none left. Better yet, think about investing in purchasing a suit. You will put use to it more than you think!

Josh and Bethany's Wedding at The Chateaux at Fox Meadows

Definitely not your typical wedding!

On Friday Josh and Bethany recited their vows in matching, custom-made Converse sneakers, in the colors of their wedding theme, black and orange! Bridesmaids, groomsmen, flowergirl and even the bride's father all followed the trend.
The bride and her father descended the spiral staircase at The Chateaux at Fox Meadows, (after pausing exactly one minute for dramatic effect,) to a Led Zepplin song.

Another surprise made the groom's mother blush with a re-mixed ending to the first dance as the groom pantomimed to the song "I'm Too Sexy."

All in all, a beautiful wedding! Best of luck to you two! There will be no lack of fun in this marriage!

Mexico Wedding

Thank you to Danny and Jenn for letting me spend their special day with them in Cancun Mexico!

The ceremony was held under this beautiful pavilion, an intimate gathering of their 40 closest friends and family. Following the ceremony where the bride and groom shared their personalized vows, was a champagne toast under the veranda. Wedding party photographs were taken in front of the flamingo habitat and of course on the sandy, white shores of the Caribbean Sea.

Dinner was served at one of The Grand Palladium's spectacular a la carte restaurants. A mariachi band serenaded the couple where they danced their official first Dance as husband and wife, complete with sombreros and a shotgun for the bride.

The party continued at an outdoor pavilion overlooking one of the resort's many pools. The band played a spectacular mix of music from all genres, getting guests of all ages up on their feet.

The bride and groom decided to host a Colorado reception once returning to the states where they shared a slideshow of their favorite highlights to those unable to make the trip. Truly and unforgettable wedding for an unforgettable couple!

Poker Party

Who says event planning is limited to weddings? On Saturday October 20th I planned a surprise poker birthday party. The guest count was 11 to make for the perfect sized poker tournament. The poker table was rented from Triple S Party Rental in Greeley, CO. Unfortunately, the table and chips were delivered a few hours earlier than planned making it a little hard to keep the theme of the party a surprise but we still had fun! Decor included cards strung on garland and poker themed plates, napkins and cups. Guests dined on simple finger foods and toasted with martinis and margaritas. At the end of the night, the big winner received a gold metal as well as a small lump sum of cash! I am sure the night was a birthday surprise that he will never forget!

This upcoming Saturday evening, I will be putting on a wine tasting in Longmont. The host is expecting at least 8 guests. We will be sampling a 2004 Stone Home Ranch, Viognier, California , 2004 Hanging Rock Winery, Strathbogie Ranges Chardonnay, Victoria, Australia , Calixte, Brut, Cremant dAlsace , 2004 Mangrove, Merlot, California and 2005 Bentgate, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, California. Lori has some great sounding hor d'ouvres on her menu; brie, stuffed mushrooms and other assorted cheeses and crackers. Yesterday was the bridal show at Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch, on Hwy 34 in Loveland almost to Estes Park. There was a great turnout. The weather was surprisingly cooperative! The vendors were wonderful! (Thank you to John from Rootles, scavenger hunts, for keeping me company at the booth next to me.) It was my first time to Sylvan Dale and I was very impressed by its beauty! There were several outdoor ceremony sites over looking the lakes and streams there. Inside was cozy as well. So I did a wedding on Saturday that had been a work in progress for over 5 months. Overall, I was pleased, as well was the groom, the mother of the bride and miscellaneous guests. Wow was the set up a lot of work though! I could not have done it all without my assistant, Emily, as well as her mother who stopped by and of course my very talented florist, Ria with Nature's Grace Design. Overall, I was most pleased with the floral centerpieces. Flexx rentals was very accommodating helping set up. The food was wonderful as always from Michael's Plum Catering. I also need to thank Pat, the disc jockey from Choice City djs who saved our behinds when we found out last minute that the bride had left her cd with her Processional song on it at work. Thanks Pat! We did have a few snags......... unfortunately, the chair covers that were ordered online from Beyond Elegance were the wrong size, a good reason to try to not order something that important over the Internet. Our paper lanterns would not stay hung on the ceiling which was too high in the first place, the ladder that was provided to us by the Chilson Center was not tall enough. Dave did accommodate the rest of our requests though and I was surprised how we managed turning that humble Senior Center's multi-purpose room into an elegant wedding reception. Oh, another thing to remember, aisle runners and wind do not mix. Man was I tired and sore by the end of this wedding but like always, when it is all over, it is bittersweet.
